Guided Ranger Hike to Buck Rock Tunnel

Explore a relic of railroad history in Southern Oregon on a hike led by a Friends of Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument interpretive ranger!

Join Friends of Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument rangers for a hike to see one of the Monument’s most interesting human-made sites. Buck Rock Tunnel began construction as part of the Oregon and California Railroad route between 1883 – 1884 by Chinese railroad workers and now represents an important archaeological site for studying the history of Chinese immigrants in Oregon.

We will enjoy a moderately strenuous hike (four miles total) while learning more about the history of the site as well as the nature we will encounter along the way.

We will return to Ashland by 1:00 PM at the latest.

Directions: We will meet at 8:00 AM and carpool from the CVS parking lot at 2341 Ashland St, Ashland, OR 97520.

Hike Duration: Around 4 miles total (2 miles out and back)

Hike Length: approximately 2.5 hours

Difficulty Level: Moderately strenuous

On the day of the hike:

Be sure to bring a sense of adventure.

Wear comfortable hiking shoes

Bring snacks and enough water for the day

Additional items: Hat, Sunscreen, Walking Sticks, Binoculars, Hand Lens Bring layers
