The Bureau of Land Management today issued its approved resource management plan and Record of Decision for the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, which will guide management of the monument’s 113,500 acres in southwestern Oregon to protect its biodiversity and important historic resources while providing for public access and recreational opportunities.

Seven years ago, three groups separately sued the federal government over the expansion of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument: Murphy Company, an Oregon-based timber company; the Association of O&C Counties, a group advocating for timber management; and the American Forest Resource Council, an advocacy group for the timber industry. The AFRC and AOCC lawsuits were later consolidated.

A $33.2 million federal grant will allow the Oregon Department of Transportation to build the state’s first wildlife overcrossing over Interstate 5 in southern Oregon’s Cascade Siskiyou National Monument. It’s also the first such crossing for the entire stretch of I-5 between Mexico and Canada.

Oregon has received $33 million in federal funding to construct the state’s first wildlife overpass over Interstate 5.

Overpass construction will span the northbound and southbound lanes just north of the Oregon-California state line, within the Mariposa Reserve of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, to help reduce vehicle-wildlife collisions, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

A proposed Resource Management Plan for the management and protection of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument has been put out by the Bureau of Land Management.

The RMP’s underlying purpose is to provide a management framework, including objectives and management direction, that guides BLM to protect and restore the resources, objects and values for which the area is designated over the next 20 years.
